Gamelan Galak Tika - Boston's oldest and most innovative Balinese performance ensemble - begins its 26th season with a program of old and new, from traditional Balinese music and dance to four world premieres of new compositions for American Gamelan instruments. The new works - by group founder Evan Ziporyn and group members Jody Diamond, Donovan Edelstein, and Ryan Meyer - will be performed on Lou Harrison's beautifully resonant 'Old Granddad' instruments. Also featured will be the stunning, virtuosic "Taruna Jaya" featuring guest Balinese dancer Made Ayu Oka Wijayanti, traditional dances performed by Galak Tika members, as well as performances by and Boston-based gendér wayang group Gamelankemana and the first appearance of Gamelan Gitar Tika (Cambridge Guitar Gamelan). We are also proud to present a pre-concert performance at 7 pm by Gamelan Anak Tika (Cambridge Youth Gamelan).
